Meet Mr. Biersack
I am a graduate of Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York. I graduated in May 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Mathematics, and again in May 2018 with a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.). I am certified by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) in the areas of Childhood and Special Education for grades 1-6.
Currently, I work as an Instructional Support Assistant for the Office of Online Learning at MSMC, specializing in the use of learning management systems and web-based tools to augment instruction, as well as best practices in online education pedagogy.
In the Fall of 2014, I completed my student teaching in accordance with the New York State Department of Education's requirements for teacher certification. My first placement was in a first grade classroom, in which I taught math units on numbers, counting, and geometry. Secondly, I was placed in a self-contained classroom with students in the fourth and fifth grades. Among the topics taught were the standard algorithms for multidigit multiplication and division, place values, and operations with decimals. In this experience, I was also trained to teach literacy in accordance with the Wilson reading system.
Along with teaching, I also have a passion for the performing arts. In my personal life, I have a background in acting, directing, and stagecraft. I enjoy incorporating this experience into my career as a teacher, as drama and theatre are research-based teaching modalities that improve student learning. In April of 2013, I presented on this topic with Dr. Jane Gangi at a conference for the Collaboration on Equity in Literacy Learning (CELL) at Mount Saint Mary College.
